As a parent one can try to help the child to sit up when the little one is about five months old. One can use cushions or pillows to support the child’s back or can hold the hip of the child gently while he/she is trying to sit. Giving too much support is not suitable because the child will not develop the strength to maintain an upright position if he/she is completely supported. Instead of giving more support parents should take precaution that the child doesn’t get hurt if he/she topples to one side while trying to sit up. One can keep cushions so that the child doesn’t hit any hard surface but still learns to support the body weight while sitting in an erect manner. 

Parents are advised to remain observant regarding their child’s movements and there is absolutely no reason to be anxious if the child is not ready to sit up. Some kids take a longer duration to arrive at the stage of sitting up and usually there is no reason to worry. However if the parent feels the need to consult a doctor regarding the child’s development then he/she can definitely do that.
